I was going to start my new experience as an Intern January 27th, but because of the heavy snowstorm that razed New York, and covered New Rochelle with snow, my first day of Internship was cancelled. So I started one day later on February 28th.
When I first arrived at MarCom, which is pretty close from Iona College, I met with the charming and professional, Dawn Insanalli, the director of Media Relations. We both start talking about what was I going to do in my MarCom internship.
She explained to me that my tasks in the department would be about fund raising, media relations, marketing, and long highlights.
She also said that I must to complete 90 hours to complete all the credits of the Internship. So we adapted the timetable to my schedule, and we fixed the internship on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Dawn also told me that if I had any problem during the Intern because of my homework's, exams, jobs interviews or whatever, I could have the flexibility to notify her in the morning and make up the hours another day.
After that, she introduced me to all the people who work in the department of MarCom: Todd Wilson the senior director of College Marketing & Communications, Suzanne Flood the content specialist, Bianca De León the digital and social media manager, and Suzanne Augustyn the director of Creative Services. All them were nice and kind to me, so I feel lucky to work with them on the team.
My first task as an Intern was to help Bianca to do a database with all the departments and groups at Iona College. Looking for their Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, and if they're already active on those social networks. Nothing impossible for a student of the new generation, who all of us know how to use perfectly the social networks and new media.
Then I helped Suzanne to tag workers and members of Iona College in the photo gallery in order to find quickly the photos regarding the location of the shot, who appears on it and when was it, and the date it was taken.
As this was my first day there, I didn't know a lot of people from Iona, so I started tagging people who I know. Such as:
The President of Iona, Joseph E. Nyre.
Sibdas Ghosh, Dean School of Arts and Science.
And, of course, Jerry Martin, ESL Program Director.
When I saw my watch, there was 3 p.m., time to go.
My first day passed quickly, it was fun and also I learned new things.
Definitely that was a good start to my new adventure; my international internship.
